About the Author John Richardson is the author of a multivolume biography on the life of Picasso; the fourth and final volume is forthcoming. His memoir The Sorcerer’s Apprentice was published in 1999, followed by a collection of essays and reviews, Sacred Monsters, Sacred Masters, in 2001. He is a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, and Vanity Fair. Diana Widmaier Picasso is an art historian who has written widely on Picasso’s work. She is the granddaughter of Pablo Picasso and Marie-Therese Walter. Elizabeth Cowling is professor emeritus of history of art at Edinburgh University, a curator of Picasso Looks at Degas (2010) and Picasso: Sculptor/Painter (1994), a contributor of numerous catalogue essays on Picasso, and the author of Visiting Picasso: The Notebooks and Letters of Roland Penrose (2006) as well as the seminal Picasso: Style and Meaning (2002). Art lovers have cause to be thankful for Picasso's strong libido. This book is testament to his sexual desire and his amazing creative talent. It forms one of the series of Picasso associated publications issued in conjunction with exhibitions held at the Gagosian Gallery. The other volumes cover the Mediterranean years and the output of his last years (Mosqueteros). To those familiar with these excellent issues, they will yet again encounter the writings of the Picasso authority John Richardson. There are additionally essays by Diana Widmaier Picasso (The Marie-Therese Years) and Elizabeth Cowling (The Image of Picasso-Sculptor in the 1930s).Apart from the essays, there are numerous color illustrations of paintings and sculptures inspired by Marie-Therese Walter. While a number of these art works are famous and familiar, there are many more, often sourced from private collections, that are not commonly encountered. There are additionally numerous monochrome documentary photographs including those of Picasso, his muse and his studio. Furthermore there is a reprinting of Brassai's 1933 photographs of a number of Picasso's works.As with the other volumes in this series, the publication standards are of a luxurious standard and this book comes highly recommended.
