Reviews

Richard Thompson and his work are presented in depth in The Art of Richard Thompson, giving the readers a first row seat to the daily battles in his career as an editorial illustrator and later on against Parkinson's disease. The candid interviews and Richards input are incredible, laying bare a lot of the thought process and behind the scenes stuff every artist, specially cartoonists and writers go through. It's a very humbling, telling occasion as Bill Watterson and Pete de Seve, among others, pay tribute to Richards hardcore, "all in", commitment and we get to see what it really takes to make great work. There's no holding back with Richard and the Art of Richard Thompson shows. The scope of the book is wide and in spite of the many quality reproductions, you should get separate volumes for Cul de Sac. The Poor Almanac pieces are brilliant as well, since the out of print hardcover became an expensive collectors item. The Kindle version is good, the images are reasonably sized and you get the sense special care was taken to present it nicely. Do you draw and want to become a real professional artist/ author/ cartoonist? Get this book.
