Hockney on `Art' Details

From Library Journal Over the past 20 years, British artist Hockney (b. 1937) and filmmaker Joyce have engaged in a series of in-depth conversations on art, the creative process, and the way we see the world. From Cubism and the lie of perspective, to the memory and magic of art, these interviews follow Hockney's artistic journey from his early paintings to the photomontages, or "joiners," as he calls them, of the 1980s and 1990s, to his more recent return to painting and stage design. Although "Hockney on His Art" would have been a more appropriate title for this volume, this is a fascinating look at the deep aesthetic that informs this artist's oeuvre. Illustrated with 180 works of art (150 in color), this book is recommended for most art collections.Jeff Ingram, Newport P.L., ORCopyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Hockeny on Art: Conversations with Paul Joyce, gives the reader a view of a living artist. The dialogue may be slow, but it is a perfect way to present the 'person and mind' as he lives life; without the pump and hype of short clip articles, gallery opening and exhibitions! Enjoy the read and the artwork! But take care in ordering this book:Hockney on Art: Conversations with Paul Joyce - Little, Brown - published 1999 with the ISBN# 978-1-4087-0157-7 - has dimensions of 8 1/4" x 8 1/4"! (INCHES smaller than the original book I found in my public library with the same title, publisher and publication date.)When you order Hockney on Art: Conversation with Paul Joyce, search for the ISBN# 0-316-86074-3 and check to be sure it measures 10 1/4" x 10 1/4". The illustrations are a good size and type is much easier to read. It's a treasure, well worth the price!-- I have not yet found a way to search for this book by it's ISBN # on Amazon! My initial interest in Hockney was his paintings: the use of color and form to create a feeling of quiet space between people, as they gather, rest or stand alone; as cliffs will do.But, in looking, I discovered a wealth of photographic work that relates to collage - I had just begun teaching collage! Photographs of people, several varied views, sliced into squares; chosen and arranged in a way that speaks volumes about the people, the space, still air and emotion that happens (page 59.) In contrast, people meet in a composition the air vibrates with talk, sharing and exchange a mix of new ideas (composition on page 17 - Steve Cohen, Ian, Gary, Lindsay, Doug, Anthony, Ken. Los Angeles, March 8th 1982.)What better way to explain to students, the new, vibrant expression that may be found in creating a collage!I went out in the sunshine and photographed a chair from several angles, no one image expressed the form and beauty of that chair and it's shadow, as a composite, a collage (page114, Chair)! We do not live in a still world: if things are not moving and changing their angle and faces around us, we are moving through that world changing our own view. This happens with few exceptions. The collage artist sees and brings things to life, discovers and uses intuition to create a new point of view to life!Find pictures at your library - q N6797 H57 A.35 1999xDYC
